We have all dreamed of having the ability to fly. Consumer drone technology allows all of us to fulfill that dream.
I was at the Nubble Lighthouse one morning many years ago and ran into a man flying a huge kite with a remote control in his hand. It turned out that he had a camera attached to his kite high in the sky so that he could take photos of the lighthouse. While the images he shot that day were stunning, they required so much specialized equipment and ideal conditions to create.
Planes and helicopters have provided a platform for photography and video for years as well, but the cost can be prohibitive, and close range aerials are not possible from them.
Drone photography gives us the opportunity to show familiar locations from a new perspective above the terrestrial plane. We can fly high enough to show the stunning beauty of the landscape around us, but fly low enough to maintain the intimate connection to a place so important to our emotional understanding of what is around us.
Drone images and video alone can make for video that creates feelings of awe and wonder among viewers. They can also be used to augment projects that employ traditional video and still image media. Aerial imagery gives a sense of scale and place that is hard to replicate through any other methods, and gives creators new opportunities to convey their messages. Given that the widespread use of drone images is such a new phenomenon, we have only begun to see the amazing potential of what we can create with it. The future of media is an exciting one.
